after all the printing tests it was time for a change of scenery! coonamble, which is somewhere 8 hours northwest of sydney in the middle of nowhere, has an annual rodeo that attracts people from near and far - and even a kombi from the northern beaches.
experiencing life in rural australia was definitely interesting and very different from living on an urban beach. putting the animal rights discussion to the side for the purpose of this post, a rodeo is the central social activity once you leave the big urban hubs. the excitement of cowboys with 'bums of steel' coming into town. the pub is buzzing. little girls dressed up in pink boots and matching pink hats. wherever you look the belt buckles get bigger and have more bling.
and the action in bull and bronco riding and steer wrestling just pulls you in. from the under 11 year olds that ride on calves it builds up to the big bulls and the proffessional cowboys. one of the best things is probably the attitude from the senior bulls - as soon as the cowboy is off their back (most often in less than 8 seconds) they prance around all muscles and pride and often give the 'clowns' on the field a run for their money.
definitely worth the visit and the starlit skies at night out in the country are just breathtaking!
